Regulations for Ph.D
     
  1. Educational Qualifications:

M.Sc/M.C.A./M.A./M.S.(By Research) or equivalent degree in the relevant branch of Science and Humanities with minimum 60% or equivalent grade.
 
  (iii)
Ph.D. Degree in Management Studies
MBA/M.S.(By Research) or equivalent degree in the Management Studies with minimum 60% or equivalent grade.
 
 
* All degree must be from AICTE/UGC approved Institutions.
 
   
 
  2. Categories of Ph.D. Programmes:
      • Full-time with Fellowship (Project/National level Schemes)
      • Full-time Non-Stipendiary / Sponsored
      • Part-time (Internal / External)
 
     
  Full time Ph.D. Programme:  
     
 
Candidates under Full time shall do research work in this University and shall be available during the total working hours for curricular, co-curricular and related activities. However, on recommendation of the University Research Board (URB) and the Department Research Committee (DRC) a full time scholar shall be permitted by the Director (R&D) to spend up to one year in any other institution, both inside and outside India or on a project approved for the purpose of carrying out research in areas related to the subject of investigation. Under extraordinary circumstances permission for extending the stay will be decided by the URB.
 
     
  Part Time Ph.D. Programme:  
     
 
Candidates, who are working full time on permanent basis in any organization approved by the URB, are eligible to register for Ph.D. under Part time programme.
 
     
  3. University Research Board (URB)  
     
 

The University Research Board comprises of the following members:

Vice-Chancellor - Chairman
Director (R&D) - Secretary
Director (AC) - Member
Director (SA) - Member
External experts - Five Members

In the absence of Vice-Chancellor, his nominee will officiate as Chairman of the URB.

 
     
  4. Department Research Committee (DRC):  
     
 

All candidates shall work under a DRC consisting of the following members:

  • HoD - Chairman
  • All recognized research guides of the department concerned.
  • External experts: 2 (Based on the need, no of experts may be increased)

Responsibility:

  • Scrutinizing the research proposal submitted by the candidates and making suitable recommendations.
  • Ratification of research guide based on the area of interest of the candidate.
  • Allotting co-guide, if necessary, based on the recommendation of the guide (If the guide is from outside of Kalasalingam University, then a Co-guide from this University is mandatory).
  • Monitoring the progress of the candidate once in six months.

In exceptional circumstances if the DRC recommends and the URB deems it fit, the duration of the programme may be whittled down by one year, to enable the research scholar to submit the thesis in advance.
 
     
 

6. Selection Procedure:

  • Admission at any point of time.
  • The candidate should get consent from a research guide and Co-guide (if necessary).
  • Research proposal will be scrutinized by DRC which will make suitable recommendation.

7. Registration:

The selected candidate has to register every semester till the submission of the thesis.

8. Extension of Maximum Duration:

In exceptional circumstances if the DRC recommends and the URB deems it fit, a maximum grace period of one year beyond the normal maximum period of 6 years may be granted, by the Vice– Chancellor, six months at a time, to enable the research scholar to submit the thesis.

9. Course Work:

A research candidate shall undergo course work consisting of four courses of 3 credits each. The courses can be designed by the guide or may be chosen from the available PG level courses offered by this University. The guide can also offer additional courses, if necessary. Courses designed by the guide have to be approved by the Director (Academics).

10. Duration for completion of course work:

Course work must be completed within one year from the date of registration for full time candidates and two years for part time candidates which is extendable by one semester on the recommendation of the DRC. Candidates who fail to complete the course work within the prescribed period will not be permitted to continue the research.

11. Comprehensive Examination:

Immediately after the successful completion of the course work, the DRC will conduct a comprehensive oral examination. Based on the performance of the candidate, the committee will decide to permit either to proceed with thesis work or to reappear for viva. If the performance is still not satisfactory, then his/her registration will be cancelled. The minimum period for submission of thesis is one year after completion of the comprehensive examination.

12. Change of Research Guide:

Change of research guide shall not be permitted as a matter of course. In exceptional cases such changes may be permitted provided that,

  • the research guide under whom the candidate has originally registered gives a “No Objection Certificate”.
  • the new guide gives a “Certificate of Willingness” to guide the candidate for the remaining period of research.

In case the “No Objection Certificate” is not obtainable, the case shall be considered by the URB on its merit.

If there is a change of research guide and not the topic, then the date of registration will not change.

13. Cancellation of Registration:

The registrations of a research scholar for the Ph.D. programme shall stand cancelled under the following cases:

  • The research scholar wishes to withdraw from the course and wishes to cancel his/her registration.
  • The registration of a research scholar has exceeded the maximum period stipulated for the Ph.D. programme.
  • The research scholar has not paid the semester fees within the stipulated time.
  • The research scholar is found to be pursuing some other degree/diploma during the research period, without approval of the guide.

14. Submission of Synopsis:

The synopsis shall be accepted only when the research scholar has at least three papers (either published or accepted) in peer-reviewed journals/refereed conference preceedings, with at least one of them in an International Journal. Six copies and an e-copy of the synopsis (PDF format) shall be submitted. Synopsis shall be presented by the candidate for approval from DRC before submission. The thesis shall be submitted within 6 months from the date of submission of the synopsis.

15. Submission of thesis:

Six copies of the thesis and an e-copy shall be prepared in accordance with the format and specification prescribed.

16. Thesis Evaluation:

The research guide will submit a panel of 6 examiners, 3 from India and 3 from outside India. The Vice-Chancellor shall consider these names and constitute a Board of two examiners consisting of one from each of the above categories. The Vice-Chancellor shall nominate any one of the examiner who had evaluated the thesis as an External Examiner for conducting Ph.D. viva voce.

All the examiners shall send their reports as a hard copy to the Director (R&D) by name. In addition, the examiners shall also send their reports by e-mail to the Director (R&D).

  • If one examiner recommends rejection, the candidate shall carryout further research for one more year as directed by the examiners and submit the thesis. Fresh panel of three examiners shall be fixed and thesis evaluated.
  • If one examiner recommends award of the degree and the other examiner recommends revision, the thesis should be revised on the lines of the report of the examiner who asked for revision. The revised thesis will be sent to the same examiner for evaluation, if he/she has accepted to evaluate the revised thesis. Otherwise the revised thesis will be sent to a third examiner for evaluation.

Once the University comes up with the decision as “Revision and Resubmission” of the thesis, the guide/guides shall be requested to direct the student to revise and resubmit the thesis after three months but within a period of one year from the date of intimation of the same. Copies of the reports of the examiners shall be made available to the candidate for carrying out the corrections.

17. Viva Voce Examination:

If both examiners recommend his/her award of the degree to the candidate, the candidate will be required to defend his thesis in a public viva voce Examination. The following is the composition of the viva voce Board.

  • Head of the concerned department (Chairman)
  • Research Guide (Member)
  • One of the examiners who evaluated the thesis (Member)

If the viva voce board declares the performance of the research scholar as not satisfactory, he/she may be asked to reappear for viva-voce examination at a later date (not earlier than a month and not later than six months from the date of the first viva voce). On the second occasion, the viva voce board will be expanded by adding additional members by the Vice-Chancellor.

If the viva voce board on the second occasion also evaluates the performance of the research scholar not satisfactory, the matter will be referred to URB for final decision.

18. Award of Ph.D. Degree:

If the performance of the research scholar in the viva voce is satisfactory, he/she will be awarded Ph.D. degree on the recommendation of the Board of Governors of the University.

19. The Act of Plagiarism:

If a research scholar is found to have been involved in plagiarism after thorough enquiry by a committee appointed by the URB, his/her research registration shall be terminated and also he/she shall be debarred to register for any other programme in this university. Further the recognition of the concerned research guide shall be withdrawn.

22. Power to Modify:

Notwithstanding all that have been stated above, the Academic Council has the right to modify any of the regulations from time to time.
