The Department of Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering (DBCE), a young and vibrant unit of Kalasalingam University, had its humble beginnings in the year 2001 with a 4-year undergraduate programme in Biotechnology, affiliated to Anna University. This academically active department has won many laurels to its credit in a short span of six years. In 2004, the department moved to an independent, three-storey building which houses its research labs, discipline-specific teaching labs, individual faculty offices and classrooms. In 2006, the department was recognized as a research centre for pursuing doctoral programmes in the field of Biotechnology.

The department currently offers training in both biotechnology and chemical engineering at the undergraduate level and in biotechnology at the postgraduate level. Students are trained by experienced faculty members with diversified research interests. Our faculty members have been trained in premier institutions in India and abroad. Some of them have taught at universities abroad and/or have held senior positions in biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The department has several externally funded projects sponsored by Government agencies, such as the DBT, DST, DRDO and ICMR.

Since its inception in 2002, DBCE has been engaged in quality education and research for which it has won respect and appreciation from around the country. Besides being trained in their curricula, students also receive intensive coaching to prepare themselves to sit for examinations like the GATE, GRE, TOEFL and IELTS. Several of our students have been admitted to institutions of higher learning in India and in countries like Austria, Australia, Germany, Singapore and the UK.
